Je suis Iain Lovatt, je suis maire de la ville de Whitchurch-Stouffville, j’ai été élu conseiller municipal en 2014 puis élu maire de la ville en 2018.
2. Si je dis « francophone », quelle est la première chose qui vous vient à l’esprit ?
Je pense Canadien.
3. Avez-vous eu la chance d’apprendre le français, ou le parlez-vous ?
Je ne le parle pas, j’ai eu peu d’occasions de l’apprendre à l’école.
4. Y a-t-il une école francophone dans votre communauté, est-ce un avantage ?
Oui, il y en a une, une école catholique française. Elle a une communauté fantastique, j’ai d’ailleurs participé à des événements au sein de l’établissement scolaire. Il y a des projets pour la construction d’une nouvelle école d’immersion dans les deux prochaines années.
En plus d’une école, qu’est-ce qui pourrait contribuer au développement de la communauté francophone ? Des cours de français langue seconde pour adultes, peut-être par le biais d’une bibliothèque.
5. Parler français est-il un avantage pour vous ?
Oui, j’aimerais bien pouvoir parler français.
6. Votre ville fait-elle quelque chose pour soutenir la communauté francophone ou pour promouvoir l’apprentissage du français ?
Non, nous ne le faisons pas pour l’instant.
7. Pourriez-vous dire quelque chose en français pour nous ?
« Bonjour » est à peu près tout ce qu’il y a à dire.

1. How would you like to introduce yourself?
I am Iain Lovatt, I am the Mayor of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, I was elected as a Councillor City in 2014 and then elected Mayor of the City in 2018.
2. If I say Francophone, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
I think Canadian.
3. Did you have the chance to learn French, or do you speak it?
I don’t speak it, I had little opportunity to learn it in school.
4. Is there a French school in your community, is that an advantage?
Yes, there is one, a French Catholic school. It has a fantastic community and I have participated in events at the school. There are plans to build a new immersion school in the next two years.
5. In addition to a school, what else could contribute to the development of the Francophone community?
French as a second language courses for adults, perhaps through a library.
6. Is speaking French an advantage for you?
Yes, I would love to be able to speak French.
7. Does your city do anything to support the Francophone community or to promote learning French?
No, we do not at this time.
8. Could you say something in French for us?
« Bonjour » is about all there is to say.
